The ideal procedure for designing web pages is for the client to do what they do or know best, and the web page designer to do what they do or know best. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. As a general rule, the more creative work the web page designer is asked to do, the higher the final cost to create the web pages. The ideal for minimizing cost is itemized below:
Client |
Web Page Designer |
- A clear description of the client's products and services
- Web site addresses of a few of the client's competitors or non-competitive businesses of the same type in other cities
- Copies of brochures and/or other advertising materials used in the client's business
- Will the web site be a commerce site linked to a database and utilizing customer data collection, product information, and ordering capabilities
- A list of keywords or phrases the client feels a potential customer may use to find the client's business with an Internet search
- If the client has a preferred appearance theme, such as certain colors, navigation style, etc., discuss with web page designer
- Provide photos and/or images to be used if available
- Furnish the content to be used on each web page
|
- Carefully review all information provided by client
- Visit web sites of the client's competitors or non-competitive businesses of the same type in other cities
- If the client desires, suggest service providers who can support the needs of the final web site, such as ISPs, order processing, etc.
- If the client desires, suggest specialized supporting programs that may be needed for the functionality of the web site, such as CGI, PHP, ASP, etc. Many may be provided by the ISP hosting the client's account
- Sketch out a general layout, navigation, graphics, and colors theme for the web pages and create a template for client review
- Once a template is approved, create all the web pages with attention to search engine friendly functionality
- Review content with client and suggest wording changes to improve search engine rank, if necessary
- If the client desires, continue to administer the site but instruct the client on making minor changes as needed

Once a template page is approved, the web pages can be created very quickly. In general TCS will help their client to be self-sufficient for most of the day to day minor updates to the clients web pages.
